Allocation of work to the stations of an assembly line with buffers between stations and three general learning patterns

چکیده
This paper addresses the problem of allocating work to the stations of an assembly line for minimising the makespan required to process a lot of products with a low overall demand. This environment is characterised by different learning slopes in the various stations (due to the nature of work). We assume small (e.g. a laser pen) to medium size products (e.g. a pilot helmet) so buffer space, for temporary purposes, is typically not a problem. Three general patterns of stations’ learning are considered, namely, decreasing, increasing and constant. Methodologies are presented for the optimal allocation of work to the stations for each of these cases. Some numerical results are also presented to show a significant impact of buffer capacity on makespan reduction as well as to reveal significant improvement in the makespan value due to unequal (but optimal) work allocation.

Scheduling of Multiple Autonomous Guided Vehicles for an Assembly Line Using Minimum Cost Network Flow
This paper proposed a parallel automated assembly line system to produce multiple products having multiple autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs). Several assembly lines are configured to produce multiple products in which the technologies of machines are shared among the assembly lines when required. The transportation between the stations in an assembly line (intra assembly line) and among station...
متن کاملOn Allocation of Tasks with Different Learning Slopes to Stations in Assembly Line for Lots
This paper addresses the problem of allocating work elements with various learning slopes to stations to minimize the makespan of many products produced in an assembly line for lots. The lots are characterized by a low overall demand for each product. There is no buffer permitted in between the stations, and the line operates under learning. Due to the nature of work, station's learning slopes ...
متن کاملFuzzy multi-objective assembly line balancing problem: Fuzzy mathematical programming approach
Design of assembly line is done in order to more coordinate a collection of some consecutive work stations for the aim of obtaining more productivity from the work stations and workers. The stations are arranged in a way to have a continuous and constant material flow. In this paper a multi-objective formulation for assembly line balancing is introduced. As a solution approach a two-step approa...
متن کاملProductivity Improvement through Line Balancing by Using Simulation Modeling
The typical problems facing garment manufacturers are long production lead time, bottlenecking, and low productivity. The most critical phase of garment manufacturing is the sewing phase, as it generally involves a number of operations or for the simple reason that it’s labor intensive. In assembly line balancing, allocation of jobs to machines is based on the objective of minimizing the workfl...
متن کاملAn algorithm for integrated worker assignment, mixed-model two-sided assembly line balancing and bottleneck analysis
This paper addresses a multi-objective mixed-model two-sided assembly line balancing and worker assignment with bottleneck analysis when the task times are dependent on the worker’s skill. This problem is known as NP-hard class, thus, a hybrid cyclic-hierarchical algorithm is presented for solving it. The algorithm is based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Theory of Constraints (TOC) an...
